Quick answer

Lake Bunyonyi lies near Kabale in south-western Uganda, about 1.5–2 hours from Bwindi’s southern sectors. Visitors paddle traditional dugout canoes or modern canoes between its islands, watching birds and passing local fishermen. Many lodges offer canoes, and guided trips visit islands such as Akampene (Punishment Island) and Bushara.

Key takeaways

  • About 1.5–2 hours from Bwindi’s southern sectors.
  • Dugout and modern canoes.
  • Island visits and birdlife.
  • Perfect for a rest day after trekking.

Lake Bunyonyi formed about 18,000 years ago when lava blocked a valley. Its many islands, steep terraced hills and calm water make it one of Uganda’s most beautiful places.

Paddling on the lake

Mornings are the calmest time, when mist rises from the water. You can paddle on your own close to your lodge or join a guide for a longer trip around the islands. Dugout canoes are carved from single tree trunks; they are stable but slow, and good fun to learn.

Island visits

  • Akampene (Punishment Island): where, until the early 20th century, unmarried pregnant girls were left as punishment. Guides tell the story respectfully.
  • Bushara Island: with walking trails and a small lodge.
  • Bwama Island: with its history as a former leprosy settlement and school.

Birds

Look for grey crowned cranes, kingfishers, fish eagles, weavers and herons. The lake is famous for its birdlife around the swamps and shores.

When to go

Canoeing is possible year-round. The dry seasons, June to August and December to February, bring calm, clear mornings.

Good to know

Who it suits

Canoeing suits couples, families and anyone wanting a slow day after a gorilla trek. It also suits photographers looking for misty morning shots.

Other activities

Combine canoeing with hiking the terraced hills, cycling, a village visit or a visit to the Batwa community near the lake. Many lodges also offer zip lines and boat trips.

A suggested rest day

Start with a slow breakfast overlooking the lake, then paddle out as the mist lifts, stopping on an island for a short walk. Have lunch on a lodge deck, swim in the afternoon, and finish with a sunset boat ride or a walk up the terraced hills for the view over the islands. It is the perfect way to recover after the effort of a gorilla trek, and many guests say Bunyonyi was where they finally relaxed.

Getting there

Lake Bunyonyi is about 20 minutes from Kabale town and about 1.5–2 hours from Bwindi’s southern sectors at Rushaga and Nkuringo. From Kampala, the drive takes about seven to eight hours. Kisoro airstrip is about two hours away.

Where to stay

Lodges and camps around the lake range from simple island campsites to comfortable lodges with views over the water. Some are on islands, reached only by boat, which adds to the sense of escape.

The islands

Bunyonyi has about 29 islands, each with its own story. Some are home to farming families; others have lodges or schools. Guided boat tours visit several in a morning, explaining local history and traditions.

Safety

The lake is deep in places, and conditions can change with afternoon winds. Always wear a life jacket, stay close to the shore if you are not experienced, and go with a guide for longer trips.

Who it suits

Couples, families and anyone wanting a peaceful day after gorilla trekking. The calm water is perfect for beginners.

The lake’s history

According to local accounts and geologists, Lake Bunyonyi formed when lava from the Virunga volcanoes blocked a river valley, flooding the hills and creating the islands. Its name is often translated as “place of many little birds”. In colonial times, a doctor established a leprosy settlement and school on Bwama Island, and churches and missions shaped life around the lake. Today, farming, fishing and tourism support the communities around its shores.
