Key takeaways

  • Balance early safari starts with real rest.
  • Fewer lodge moves: two or three nights per stop.
  • Splurge on one key lodge and keep the rest simple.
  • Tell us it’s your honeymoon so lodges can prepare.

Why a safari makes a great honeymoon

A honeymoon safari gives you shared experiences you will talk about for the rest of your lives: standing an arm’s length from a silverback, watching a lioness from the vehicle at sunrise, a sundowner on a ridge with the plains turning gold. Then, ideally, a few days with nothing to do but rest on the Indian Ocean.

The key is balance. Safari days start early and can be long, so the best honeymoon itineraries mix one or two big adventures with slower days, fewer lodge changes and a beach or lake finish.

Three honeymoon routes that work

1. Gorillas and Zanzibar

Fly into Entebbe or Kigali, trek gorillas in Bwindi or Volcanoes National Park, add a night or two on Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Kivu, then fly to Zanzibar for five days of beach. One extraordinary encounter, then pure rest.

2. Serengeti and Zanzibar

The classic: a week on Tanzania’s northern circuit (Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater), followed by a short flight to Zanzibar. See our Serengeti & Zanzibar idea.

3. Uganda in depth

For adventurous couples: the Shoebill at Mabamba, gorillas in Buhoma, the Kazinga Channel, chimpanzees in Kibale and the crater lakes, as in our 8-day safari, with an upgraded lodge in Bwindi and a final night on Lake Victoria.

Choosing lodges for two

On a honeymoon, where you sleep matters more than usual. We look for:

  • Privacy: smaller lodges with separate cottages, tents or bandas rather than corridors of rooms.
  • Views: a forest edge, crater lake or open plain from your own veranda.
  • Fewer moves: two or three nights in each place where possible.
  • One splurge: many couples choose a luxury lodge for one key stop, such as Bwindi Lodge in Buhoma, and keep the rest simpler.

A forest-view lodge in Bwindi is a popular splurge for honeymooners trekking gorillas.

Special touches we can arrange

  • Private bush breakfasts, sundowners and candlelit dinners where lodges offer them
  • Honeymoon set-ups and room upgrades, subject to availability
  • A private vehicle and guide throughout, so you set the pace
  • Hot-air balloon flights over the Masai Mara or Serengeti
  • Dhow sunset cruises and spa time in Zanzibar

Tell us it’s your honeymoon in the safari planner (there is an option for it in the “Who’s travelling?” step) and we will pass it on to every lodge.

When to go

June to October and December to February combine dry safari conditions with good beach weather in Zanzibar. If you want the Great Migration river crossings, aim for July to September in the Masai Mara or northern Serengeti; for the calving season, January to March in the southern Serengeti. Gorilla trekking works year-round. Compare months in our travel by month guide.

Budget and planning tips

  • Two travellers share the vehicle and guide, so the per-person price is lower than for a solo traveller.
  • Start planning six to nine months ahead for peak months, especially if gorillas are part of it.
  • Allow ten to fourteen days for a safari-and-beach honeymoon without rushing.
  • Take out travel insurance early, including cancellation cover for permits.

A sample 12-day honeymoon

  • Day 1: arrive in Entebbe; evening on the shore of Lake Victoria.
  • Days 2–3: fly or drive to Bwindi; a forest-view lodge and a quiet afternoon.
  • Day 4: gorilla trekking, then a relaxed evening together.
  • Days 5–6: Lake Bunyonyi: canoeing between islands and doing very little.
  • Day 7: fly from Entebbe to Zanzibar.
  • Days 8–11: beach days, Stone Town, a spice tour and a dhow sunset cruise.
  • Day 12: fly home.

A tailor-made idea we adapt to your dates, budget and pace.

Practical notes for couples

  • Zanzibar etiquette: Zanzibar is mainly Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees in Stone Town and villages; beachwear is fine at resorts. During Ramadan, eating in public during the day is discouraged.
  • Luggage: light aircraft usually allow about 15 kg each in soft bags, so share one bag of beach clothes rather than two hard suitcases.
  • Surprises: tell us privately if you are planning a surprise for your partner; we will coordinate with the lodge.
