The launch trip to the foot of the falls
The launch trip to the foot of Murchison Falls leaves Paraa in the morning or afternoon and takes about three hours return. The boat cruises 17 kilometres upriver past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles and herds of elephants and buffalo on the banks. Birds are everywhere: goliath herons, African fish eagles and colonies of carmine bee-eaters on the sandbanks in season. The boat stops below the falls, with spray rising from the gorge.
The top of the falls
The hike to the top of Murchison Falls gives the opposite view: the whole Nile squeezed through a seven-metre gap with a roar you feel in your chest. You can drive to the top, or be dropped by the launch at the base and climb for about 45 minutes to meet your vehicle. Late afternoon light is best for photos.
Game drives north of the Nile
The Buligi tracks and the plains towards the Albert Delta are some of the most productive game-viewing areas in Uganda. Expect:
- Rothschild’s giraffe, one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, in large numbers.
- Elephants and buffalo in big herds, especially near the river.
- Lions, often seen hunting Uganda kob in the early morning.
- Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi and warthog across the grassland.
- Leopards along the riverine thickets at dusk.

The delta and shoebill
A morning boat trip downriver to the Albert Delta explores papyrus channels where the Nile meets Lake Albert. It is one of Uganda’s classic shoebill sites, especially from December to March, and it is excellent for waterbirds. For the most reliable shoebill sighting in Uganda, add the Mabamba Swamp day trip from Entebbe.
Budongo Forest and Ziwa
South of the river, Budongo Forest has habituated chimpanzees and some of Uganda’s finest mahogany trees. On the drive from Kampala, rhino tracking at Ziwa lets you walk with southern white rhinos, reintroduced to Uganda after the species was wiped out here in the 1980s.
Planning your visit
Two nights in Murchison is the minimum; three lets you add the delta or Budongo without rushing. The park suits a northern loop (Ziwa, Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth) or a short trip on its own from Kampala. For costs, see our safari cost guide, or send us your dates for a tailored itinerary.
