About Akagera National Park
Akagera is Rwanda’s savannah park, on the border with Tanzania. Since African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board took over its management in 2010, lions and rhinos have been reintroduced, making it a Big Five park. Lakes and papyrus swamps line its eastern edge, and the north has open plains. Read Akagera’s Big Five.
Park entry costs US$100 per day, and two nights in Akagera and/or Nyungwe between November and May qualify for a 30% discount on Rwanda’s gorilla permit.
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, are best for game viewing, when animals gather near the lakes. The north of the park is the best area for giraffes, zebras, lions and rhinos, while the south has the lakes and the boat trip. See the Akagera National Park guide for the full story of its recovery.
