Overview

Why Amboseli?

Quick answer

Amboseli National Park covers 392 km² in southern Kenya, directly below Mount Kilimanjaro across the Tanzanian border. It is best known for its elephants, studied since 1972, and for views of the snow-capped mountain on clear mornings. Non-resident entry is US$90 per day. It is 4–5 hours from Nairobi by road or a short flight; 2 nights is ideal.

Amboseli is small by African standards, but few parks are as photogenic. Most of the park is a dry Pleistocene lake bed, dusty and flat, yet it is fed by underground streams from Kilimanjaro’s melting snow. These surface as permanent swamps, green even in the driest months, which draw elephants, buffalo and hippos from far and wide.

The combination of elephants, open plains and Africa’s highest mountain rising behind them has made Amboseli one of the most photographed places on the continent.

The elephants of Amboseli

Amboseli’s elephants are among the most studied in the world. Since 1972 researchers have followed individual families, building a unique record of elephant behaviour and social life. Because they are not hunted and are used to vehicles, the elephants come very close. See elephants beneath Kilimanjaro for the best times and places to photograph them.

Key areas

  • Enkongo Narok and Ol Okenya swamps: the green heart of the park, full of elephants, buffalo, hippos and waterbirds.
  • Observation Hill: a short climb with a panoramic view over the swamps and plains, and a good place to stretch your legs.
  • Lake Amboseli: usually a dry, shimmering bed of dust where mirages and small whirlwinds form.
  • Sinet Delta: good for birds and plains game.

Other wildlife and birds

Lions, cheetahs and spotted hyenas hunt on the plains, along with zebra, wildebeest, Maasai giraffe and Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles. Over 400 bird species have been recorded, especially in the swamps: pelicans, kingfishers, herons and crowned cranes.

The Maasai

Amboseli is Maasai land, and the park is surrounded by community group ranches and conservancies. A Maasai village visit helps you understand how people and wildlife share this landscape.

Where to stay

Lodges inside the park sit close to the swamps and give the earliest access to the morning light on Kilimanjaro. Several camps in the surrounding community conservancies, such as those on the Kimana and Selenkay group ranches, offer walking safaris, night drives and a more private experience, while paying lease fees to Maasai landowners.

Photography tips

The best light on Kilimanjaro is at sunrise, usually between 6:30 and 8:00am, before clouds build. Position yourself with elephants in the foreground and the mountain behind, using a medium zoom to keep both in frame. Dust is part of Amboseli: bring a blower and keep lenses covered between sightings.

Planning your visit

Amboseli fits into most Kenya itineraries: by road from Nairobi, by air from the Masai Mara, or on the way to Tanzania. Our 3-day Amboseli safari is a short break from Nairobi, and the 6-day Kenya safari combines it with the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. For more on Kenya, see our Kenya guide.

When to go

The best time to visit Amboseli National Park

June to October and January to February are dry, with animals concentrated around the swamps and the clearest views of Kilimanjaro, usually early in the morning. The short rains in November and the long rains from March to May bring green landscapes and dramatic skies, with fewer visitors.

Amboseli National Park safari questions

When can I see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

The mountain is often clear at dawn and late afternoon, especially in the dry months. Clouds usually build during the day, so early game drives give the best chance.

Why are Amboseli’s elephants special?

They have been studied continuously since 1972 by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, so many are known individually. They are very relaxed with vehicles, and the population includes some large-tusked bulls.

Are there lions in Amboseli?

Yes, along with cheetahs, spotted hyenas and jackals. Leopards are rare. Plains game includes zebra, wildebeest, Grant’s gazelle and buffalo.

How long should I stay in Amboseli?

Two nights is ideal for several game drives and a good chance of clear mountain views.

Can I combine Amboseli with Tanzania?

Yes. The Namanga border is about 1.5 hours away, and many itineraries continue to Arusha, Tarangire and the Serengeti.

Is Amboseli good for families?

Yes. Distances inside the park are short, the elephants are easy to see and Observation Hill gives children a chance to get out of the vehicle. Many lodges offer family rooms and Maasai-led activities for children.

What is the best route from Amboseli to the Masai Mara?

Flying is easiest: scheduled light aircraft connect Amboseli and the Mara in about an hour, often via Nairobi Wilson. By road the journey takes 8–9 hours through Nairobi, so most travellers break it at Lake Naivasha or Lake Nakuru.
