Overview

Why Jinja?

Quick answer

Jinja lies on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, about 80 km east of Kampala (2–3 hours depending on traffic). It is where the Nile flows out of the lake. Visitors take a boat to the Source of the Nile, raft grade 3–5 rapids, kayak, ride quad bikes and visit Mabira Forest on the way. It works as a long day trip or a relaxed overnight.

Jinja grew as a colonial-era railway and industrial town at the point where the Victoria Nile leaves Lake Victoria. Today it is better known as Uganda’s adventure capital. Backpackers, families and safari travellers come to see where the Nile begins, to raft its rapids and to spend a few slow days by the river.

For a classic safari itinerary, Jinja is easy to add at the start or end, since it is close to Kampala and Entebbe. It also links naturally with Sipi Falls and Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda.

The Source of the Nile

A Source of the Nile boat trip leaves from the landing sites on either bank and takes you to the spot where the river leaves the lake. Your guide points out the springs bubbling up from under the water and the line where calm lake water turns into river current. Birdlife is rich: cormorants, kingfishers, herons and fish eagles. The western bank has a monument to John Hanning Speke, the British explorer who identified the source in 1862.

White-water rafting

The Nile below Jinja is one of the world’s best rafting rivers. White-water rafting on the Nile operators offer:

  • Full-day trips through grade 3–5 rapids, with lunch on the river.
  • Half-day trips for those with less time.
  • Family floats on calmer sections for younger travellers.

Safety kayakers paddle alongside each raft, and no experience is needed. Expect to swim at least once.

Other adventures

  • Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on the calmer sections of the river.
  • Quad biking along trails through villages and farms.
  • Horse riding on paths beside the Nile.
  • Bungee jumping over the river.
  • The Mabira Forest zipline in the rainforest between Kampala and Jinja.

Culture and history

Jinja has a striking main street of colonial-era Indian shopfronts, a lively central market and a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, part of whose ashes were scattered in the Nile here in 1948. The Itanda area downstream is a good base for river views and local village walks.

Where to stay

Jinja has riverside lodges and guesthouses for every budget, from backpacker camps above the rapids to quiet boutique lodges with gardens running down to the water. Staying on the river near Bujagali or downstream towards Kalagala puts you close to the rafting start points and gives you sunset views over the Nile.

How to visit

  • Day trip: leave Kampala by 6:30am, see the Source of the Nile, have lunch by the river and return by evening.
