White-water rafting on the Nile

Big, warm, powerful rapids on the world’s most famous river: rafting the Nile at Jinja is one of Africa’s great adventures.

GradeUp to 5
DistanceAbout 30 km
DurationFull day
WaterWarm all year
Quick answer

White-water rafting on the Nile takes place below Jinja, where the river runs through a series of big rapids. Full-day trips cover about 30 km with several grade 5 rapids, including Itanda, while gentler family floats suit younger rafters. The water is warm all year, and experienced guides and safety kayakers accompany every raft. Dams have changed parts of the river, but the main rapids still run.

Key takeaways

  • Full-day trips with grade 5 rapids.
  • Family floats for younger rafters.
  • Warm water all year.
  • Safety kayakers accompany each raft.

The Nile at Jinja is wide, warm and powerful, with rapids that have made it one of the world’s best-known rafting rivers.

A rafting day

  • Morning: a safety briefing and practice on calm water: paddling, flipping and swimming.
  • Rapids: a series of big rapids, with calm sections in between for swimming.
  • Lunch: on the riverbank or an island.
  • Afternoon: more rapids, finishing with the most powerful ones, followed by a barbecue and drinks.

The rapids

The river includes rapids such as Silverback, Overtime and Itanda, known as “The Bad Place”. Since the Isimba Dam was completed in 2019, a stretch of rapids has been flooded, leaving a section of flat water, but the major grade 5 rapids remain.

Safety

Guides are trained, and safety kayakers paddle alongside the rafts to pick up swimmers. Helmets and life jackets are provided. Rafts can choose easier lines around the biggest rapids.

Family options

Family floats on gentler water are available for children, usually from around seven years. Grade 5 trips usually have a minimum age of 14–16.

When to go

Rafting runs all year. The water stays warm, and the river level is relatively stable.

Good to know

  • Wear swimwear, quick-dry clothes and sunscreen.
  • Secure your glasses with a strap.
  • Photos and videos can be bought from the operators.
  • Book in advance in busy months.

Who it suits

Rafting suits adventurous travellers, groups of friends and older children. You do not need experience, but you should be comfortable in water.

After rafting

Stay overnight in Jinja to recover, or continue to Murchison Falls or Sipi Falls. See Sipi Falls hike.

Other ways onto the water

If a full rafting day sounds too much, try a half-day trip, a family float, tubing or a guided kayak trip on calmer sections. Experienced paddlers come to Jinja for its famous kayaking waves, and operators run courses for beginners who want to learn to roll. A sunset cruise near the source of the Nile is the gentlest option of all, and works well for non-rafting members of a group who want to share the river.

Rapid grades explained

GradeWhat it means
1–2Gentle moving water, small waves
3Bigger waves, some manoeuvring
4Powerful rapids, technical lines
5Very powerful, long and difficult rapids

The Nile’s grade 5 rapids are big but deep, with warm water and calm pools below, which makes them more forgiving than rocky rivers elsewhere.

Who can raft

  • Full-day grade 5: adults and teenagers, usually 14–16+, comfortable in water.
  • Family float: younger children, from about seven years, on gentle sections.
  • Non-rafters: can join a safety kayak tour or watch from viewpoints.

Safety record

Reputable operators on the Nile have strong safety records, with trained guides, safety kayakers and good equipment. Choose an established operator and follow every instruction.

Where to stay

Riverside lodges and camps near Jinja and the rafting base points offer everything from dormitories to comfortable cottages. Many rafting packages include a night’s accommodation.

When to go

Rafting runs year-round, with warm water in every season. The river level is fairly stable, so conditions do not change much through the year.

A day on the river, in detail

Most trips start with breakfast at the rafting base, followed by a safety talk and the issue of helmets, life jackets and paddles. On calm water, guides teach paddle strokes and what to do if the raft flips, and everyone practises swimming to the raft. Then the rapids begin. Between them, long calm stretches let you swim in the warm Nile, watch kingfishers and fish eagles, and rest. Lunch is usually fruit and sandwiches on an island. The afternoon brings the biggest rapids, and the day ends with a barbecue, drinks and photos at the take-out point.
