About Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe is one of Africa’s oldest mountain rainforests, covering about 1,000 km² in south-western Rwanda. It is home to 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and huge troops of colobus, as well as the famous canopy walkway at Uwinka and more than 300 bird species. Read chimpanzees in Nyungwe and Nyungwe canopy walk.
Two nights in Nyungwe and/or Akagera between November and May qualify you for a 30% discount on Rwanda’s gorilla permit.
Nyungwe is cool and wet all year, so bring a warm layer and a rain jacket. The drier months, June to August and December to February, make the steep trails easier, and early mornings are best for chimps and birds. Birders should read Nyungwe’s forest specials, and anyone driving from Kigali can break the journey at the King’s Palace at Nyanza.
