The beach and the reef
The reef protects the lagoon, and at low tide rock pools reveal starfish, sea urchins and small fish. Snorkelling and diving trips explore the outer reef, and glass-bottomed boats suit families. Read Diani Beach.
Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park
A full-day dhow trip from Shimoni, south of Diani, visits Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, where dolphins are often seen and the snorkelling is among the best on the coast. Lunch is usually seafood on Wasini Island.
Colobus monkeys and the coastal forest
The forest behind the beach is home to the Angola colobus, and rope bridges over the road help the monkeys cross safely. A visit to the local colobus conservation centre explains its work.
Shimba Hills
About an hour inland, Shimba Hills National Reserve protects coastal rainforest and grassland, home to sable antelope, elephants and the Sheldrick Falls, an easy half-day trip from the beach.
Things to do
- Swimming and snorkelling in the lagoon.
- Dhow trips to Kisite-Mpunguti and Wasini Island.
- Kitesurfing in the windy seasons.
- Colobus conservation and forest walks.
- Shimba Hills for a half-day safari.
What to expect
Diani is warm and humid all year. It has a wide choice of hotels, restaurants and beach bars, from boutique hotels to large resorts. Dress modestly away from the beach, out of respect for local customs.
Where to stay
The Sands at Nomad (now Nomad Beach Resort) is a beachfront boutique hotel between the ocean and the forest.

Practical tips
- Check tide times; snorkelling is best near high tide.
- Use licensed operators for boat trips and diving.
- Bring reef shoes for walking on coral and rock pools.
Who it suits
Diani suits couples and honeymooners looking for a romantic finale, families who want calm water and plenty of activities, and active travellers keen on kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling. It is also an easy choice for travellers who want a beach without a long extra flight, as Ukunda is close to the safari circuit.
Where to stay
Diani has a wide range of accommodation, from boutique hotels and private villas to large family resorts with pools and kids’ clubs. Beachfront rooms give the best views, while hotels set back among the trees are often quieter and better value.
Practical tips
- Bring cash for small purchases and tips; cards work in most hotels.
- Swim in front of your hotel or with a lifeguard.
- Book dhow and diving trips with licensed operators through your hotel.
- Plan at least one lazy day; after early safari starts, the beach is the perfect place to recharge.
- Seaweed can wash up in some months; your hotel staff usually clear the beach each morning.
- For a quieter stay, choose the southern end of the beach towards Galu and Kinondo.
- Sunsets face the land here, so watch the sky turn pink over the forest from the beach.
