Quick answer

The Kazinga Channel boat cruise leaves from Mweya in Queen Elizabeth National Park and lasts about two hours. The channel links Lake George and Lake Edward, and its banks hold some of Africa’s densest concentrations of hippos, with buffalo, elephants, Nile crocodiles and huge numbers of waterbirds. Cruises run in the morning and the afternoon and cost US$30 per person.

Key takeaways

  • About two hours from the Mweya jetty.
  • Huge numbers of hippos and waterbirds.
  • Elephants and buffalo often come to drink.
  • US$30 per person.

The Kazinga Channel is about 32 km long and runs through the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Because it is the main water source for a wide area, animals come to it all day, and a boat gives you a front-row seat.

What you see

  • Hippos in large pods, yawning, grunting and wallowing.
  • Buffalo cooling off in the shallows.
  • Elephants drinking and bathing, sometimes swimming.
  • Nile crocodiles basking on the banks.
  • Waterbirds: pelicans, skimmers, kingfishers, storks and fish eagles. See waterbirds of the Kazinga Channel.

How it works

Boats leave from a jetty below the Mweya Peninsula. Larger launches carry many passengers on two decks; smaller private boats are also available. The boat travels slowly along the shore, stopping whenever there is something to see, while a ranger guide explains the wildlife.

Morning or afternoon?

Both are good. The afternoon cruise is more popular because the light is warm and elephants often come to drink in the heat. The morning cruise is quieter and good for birds.

When to go

The cruise runs all year. In the dry seasons, June to September and December to February, more animals come to the water, so sightings can be even better.

Good to know

  • The fee is US$30 per person, plus park entry (US$40 per day).
  • Arrive 15 minutes early to choose a seat on the shore side.
  • Bring a hat, sunscreen and a zoom lens.
  • Combine with a morning drive on the Kasenyi plains.

Who it suits

The cruise suits everyone, especially families, older travellers and photographers. It is relaxing, needs no fitness and is full of wildlife.

A perfect day in Queen Elizabeth

Start with an early game drive on the Kasenyi plains for lions and kob, return to your lodge for lunch and a rest, and take the afternoon cruise. End with sundowners at Mweya overlooking the channel and Lake Edward. On another day, walk into Kyambura Gorge for chimpanzees.

Photography tips

A 100–400 mm zoom covers most subjects, from yawning hippos to kingfishers on the bank. Use a fast shutter speed, because the boat moves and vibrates, and keep a lens cloth handy for spray.

Your cruise, step by step

  1. Arrive at the Mweya jetty about 15 minutes before departure, below the Mweya Peninsula.
  2. Board the launch and choose a seat on the side closest to the bank; guides usually tell you which side.
  3. Safety briefing: life jackets are provided, and the ranger guide introduces the trip.
  4. Along the shore: the boat travels slowly east along the northern bank, stopping for hippos, buffalo, elephants and birds.
  5. Turning point: after about an hour, the boat turns and returns along the same shore or the opposite side.
  6. Back at Mweya: disembark and continue to your lodge or a game drive.

Why there are so many hippos

The Kazinga Channel and the surrounding lakes support one of the largest hippo populations in Uganda. Hippos spend the day in the water to keep cool and protect their sensitive skin, and come out at night to graze on the grassland. Their dung feeds the plankton and fish that support the birds, so they are central to the whole ecosystem. You will see them yawning, fighting and wallowing, often just metres from the boat.

Choosing a boat

OptionWhat to expect
Large park launchTwo decks, a toilet on board, many passengers, good value
Smaller private boatFewer people, flexible stops, closer to the bank
Private charterExclusive use, ideal for photographers and groups

Fishing villages

The channel is home to fishing communities, such as Katunguru and Kazinga, whose wooden boats you may see on the water. Fishing is regulated inside the park, and villages benefit from tourism through community projects.

When to go

The cruise runs year-round. The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, bring more animals to the water. Migrant birds from Europe and Asia add extra species between about November and April.

Accessibility

The large launches are easy to board and are suitable for older travellers and those with limited mobility. Tell us in advance if you need assistance, and we will arrange the best boat.

Where to stay

The Mweya Peninsula has lodges and a hostel right above the channel, so you can walk or drive a few minutes to the jetty and watch elephants from your terrace in the evening. Lodges near Katunguru, Kasenyi and the Kyambura area are a short drive away and often better value. Staying two nights in the north of the park lets you combine the cruise with a morning on the Kasenyi plains, a walk in Kyambura Gorge and a visit to the crater lakes. Ishasha, in the south, is about three hours away and is best visited on the way to or from Bwindi.

Plan it

The cruise is part of our 3-day Queen Elizabeth National Park safari and 6-day gorillas, chimps and Queen Elizabeth safari.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the Kazinga Channel cruise?

About two hours.

How much does it cost?

US$30 per person, plus park entry.

Are hippos dangerous to the boat?

Boats keep a safe distance, and guides know hippo behaviour well.

Is there a toilet on the boat?

Larger launches have one; ask before booking a small boat.

Do I need to book the cruise in advance?

Yes, especially in peak season. We book it with your park activities so that it fits your game drives.

Which is better, the Kazinga cruise or the Murchison launch?

Both are excellent. The Kazinga cruise has more hippos and waterbirds in a shorter trip; the Murchison launch adds the drama of the falls. Many travellers do both on a longer Uganda safari.
