Stone Town is a conservative, mainly Muslim town, so cover shoulders and knees when walking around the old town, especially near mosques. During Ramadan, some restaurants close during the day and the atmosphere changes, with lively evening markets after sunset. The lanes are narrow and best explored on foot with a local guide.
