Overview

Why the Rwenzori?

Quick answer

Rwenzori Mountains National Park covers about 996 km² on Uganda’s border with Congo and rises to 5,109 m on Margherita Peak, Africa’s third-highest summit. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Treks range from day hikes to 7–10 day circuits; the summit needs about 8–9 days and basic glacier skills. The best months are December–February and June–August.

The Rwenzori Mountains are not volcanic like Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya. They are a block of ancient rock pushed up between two arms of the Rift Valley, rising to snow-capped peaks on the equator. The ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy described snowy “Mountains of the Moon” as the source of the Nile, and the name has stuck.

The range is shared with the Democratic Republic of Congo. On the Ugandan side, Rwenzori Mountains National Park protects the highest peaks, glaciers and lakes. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 for its unique alpine habitat and beauty, and it is also a Ramsar wetland of international importance.

Vegetation zones

A Rwenzori trek climbs through five distinct zones, each with its own character:

  1. Montane forest (up to about 3,000 m): tall trees, primates and forest birds.
  2. Bamboo zone: dense, dark and often muddy.
  3. Heather zone: tree heathers draped in moss and lichen, like a fairy-tale forest.
  4. Alpine zone: giant lobelias and groundsels, some taller than a person.
  5. Rock and ice above about 4,500 m: glaciers, snow and bare rock.

Trekking routes

The Central Circuit

The traditional route starts at Nyakalengija near Kasese and loops through the Bujuku Valley, past Lake Bujuku and over the Scott Elliot Pass to the Kitandara Lakes. It takes about 7–10 days with a summit attempt, using a chain of mountain huts.

The Kilembe Trail

The southern route from Kilembe climbs through the Mubuku and Nyamwamba valleys with spectacular views and quieter trails. It takes about 8 days to the summit and back, or less for treks without the peak.

Day hikes and short treks

Shorter routes visit waterfalls, the forest zone and viewpoints, and suit travellers with only a day or two to spare. See trekking the Rwenzori Mountains for options.

Climbing Margherita Peak

At 5,109 m, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley is Africa’s third-highest summit. The final climb crosses the Stanley Plateau and the Margherita Glacier using crampons and ropes, with guides fixing lines on the steepest sections. The glaciers have been shrinking fast, so routes change from year to year. Our 6-day Rwenzori Mountains trek suits hikers who want the high valleys without the technical summit.

Wildlife and birds

The lower forest has chimpanzees, L’Hoest’s monkeys, black-and-white colobus and the Rwenzori three-horned chameleon. Birders come for Albertine Rift endemics such as the Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori double-collared sunbird and strange weaver.

What to bring

  • Waterproof boots and gaiters, plus gumboots (rubber boots) for the bogs.
  • Warm, layered clothing and a down jacket for high camps; temperatures fall below freezing at night.
  • A good waterproof jacket and trousers, and dry bags for everything.
  • See our travel essentials guide for the full list.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park safari questions

How hard is the Rwenzori?

Very demanding. The trails are steep, muddy and boggy, with long days at altitude. The summit of Margherita Peak requires walking on glacier ice with crampons and ropes. Day hikes and the lower sections are suitable for fit hikers without mountaineering experience.

How long does it take to climb Margherita Peak?

About 8–9 days on the Central Circuit or the Kilembe trail, including acclimatisation and a summit day starting before dawn.

Do I need climbing experience?

For the summit, basic experience with crampons and an ice axe helps, although guides teach the essentials. Treks to the high camps and lakes without the summit need no technical skills.

What is special about the Rwenzori’s plants?

The upper slopes have giant lobelias, groundsels and heathers growing to many times their normal size, in an alpine zone found only on East Africa’s highest mountains.

Can I do a short Rwenzori hike?

Yes. Day hikes and 2–3 day treks to the lower camps and waterfalls give a taste of the forest, bamboo and heather zones without a summit attempt.
