Wildlife 7 days7-Day Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley Safari
Two of Uganda’s greatest wildernesses in one journey: the thundering Nile at Murchison Falls, then the wide, wild plains of Kidepo Valley in the far north-east.

The most immersive gorilla encounter in Africa: join researchers and trackers following a family still getting used to people, with up to four hours in their company instead of one.
For most visitors, one hour with mountain gorillas is enough to be life-changing. For photographers, nature lovers and returning trekkers, the habituation experience offers something deeper: up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still being habituated, in the company of the rangers and researchers who do this patient work.
Only a handful of permits are available each day, in groups of up to four visitors, and the experience is offered only in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector. Because the family is less used to people, encounters can feel wilder and more intense, and you see far more natural behaviour than in a single hour.
This itinerary gives you a full day for the experience, a rest day for an optional second trek or community visit, and road journeys from and to Entebbe or Kampala. Read our gorilla habituation experience guide, our gorilla permit guide and the Bwindi park guide to prepare.
Drive south-west from Entebbe or Kampala via the equator, Masaka and Mbarara, through Ankole cattle country and into the terraced highlands around Kabale. You arrive at your lodge on the edge of Bwindi’s southern forest in the evening, ready for a quiet dinner.
Report early to the Rushaga park office for a briefing. Habituation groups are limited to four visitors, and you set out with rangers, trackers and researchers to find a gorilla family that is in the process of becoming used to humans, a process that takes around two years.
When the family is located, you stay with them for up to four hours, watching how the trackers approach, recording behaviour and learning to read the gorillas’ signals. The longer time means you see far more natural behaviour: feeding, resting, grooming, play and the silverback leading the group. Expect a demanding day off-trail through thick vegetation, and return to the lodge in the afternoon.
A flexible day to recover and reflect. Options include a guided walk to a nearby village and school, a visit to the Batwa community, a short forest walk to a waterfall, or simply relaxing with views over the forest. If you would like a second gorilla encounter, a standard trek with a different family can be arranged on this day (permit extra).
After breakfast, drive back through Kabale, Mbarara and Masaka to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the evening, with a stop at the equator for photographs. Alternatively, fly from Kisoro to Entebbe in about 1.5 hours to save the long drive and arrive in time for an afternoon at the lake shore.

Yes. Many travellers do the habituation experience on day two and a standard trek with a different family on day three. A second permit is needed.
Yes. Because the family is still getting used to people, you may see a silverback display, mock-charge or move the group away. Trackers read these signals and position visitors safely, which is part of what makes the experience so intense.
