Kyambura Gorge Lodge

A stylish lodge converted from an old coffee store on the edge of Kyambura Gorge, with views over the savanna of Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenzori.

Kyambura Gorge Lodge sits on the edge of Kyambura Gorge, the forested “valley of apes” in Queen Elizabeth National Park. It was created from an old coffee store, and it is part of the Volcanoes Safaris collection, alongside Mount Gahinga Lodge and lodges in Bwindi and Rwanda.

Rooms

The lodge has eight bandas, including deluxe bandas, each named after a Kyambura chimpanzee and facing either the savanna or the gorge.

Community

Guests can visit the Kyambura women’s coffee cooperative, which shows how specialty coffee is grown and processed by local farmers.

Why we like it

  • Close to the Kyambura Gorge chimp walk.
  • A beautiful, intimate design.
  • Strong community connections.

Who it suits

Couples and design lovers who want an intimate lodge near the chimps.

Getting there

The northern part of the park, around Mweya, Kasenyi and Katunguru, is about six to seven hours by road from Kampala via Mbarara, or three hours from Kibale. Ishasha in the south is about two hours from Bwindi’s Buhoma sector. Flights from Entebbe serve Kasese and Mweya airstrips in the north and Kihihi near Ishasha.

About Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park stretches from the Rwenzori foothills to the Ishasha River on the Congo border. Its highlights are the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, with huge numbers of hippos and waterbirds, lions and Uganda kob on the Kasenyi plains, chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha in the south. More than 600 bird species have been recorded. Read the Kazinga Channel boat cruise.

Planning your stay

Two or three nights in Queen Elizabeth allow a boat cruise, a morning on the Kasenyi plains and a walk in Kyambura Gorge. The park sits between Kibale and Bwindi, so it fits naturally into most western Uganda itineraries. See our 3-day Queen Elizabeth National Park safari.
