Thatched cottage at Engagi Lodge, Ruhija, Bwindi
Mid-range lodge · Ruhija, Bwindi

Engagi Lodge

A mid-range lodge in Bwindi’s Ruhija sector, with thatched cottages looking over the forest canopy and a fire-warmed dining room for cool highland evenings.

Engagi Lodge sits in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, at the cool, high eastern edge of the forest. Its main lodge is built from local stone and wood under a thatched roof, with a dining room warmed by a fire and a terrace looking out over the canopy.

Rooms

The lodge has eight cottages with double or twin beds, each with an en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water and a private veranda facing the forest, ideal for morning coffee as the mist lifts.

Why we like it

  • Close to the Ruhija gorilla briefing point.
  • A great base for birders heading to Mubwindi Swamp.
  • Cosy and good value in the coolest part of Bwindi.

Who it suits

Gorilla trekkers with Ruhija permits and keen birders.

Things to do nearby

  • Gorilla trekking from the Ruhija briefing point.
  • Birding on the Mubwindi Swamp trail, the classic route for Albertine Rift endemics.
  • Forest walks in the cool highland forest.
  • Lake Bunyonyi for a rest day on the way to or from Kabale.

About the Ruhija sector

Ruhija lies in the east of Bwindi at about 2,300 metres, the highest of the four sectors, and it is cool and often misty. It is Bwindi’s top birding area, with the trail down to Mubwindi Swamp, home of the African green broadbill and other Albertine Rift endemics. Gorilla families are trekked from the Ruhija briefing point, and the drive through “the Neck” connects Ruhija with Buhoma. Read Albertine Rift endemics in Bwindi.

Gorilla permits and booking

Gorilla permits are tied to a sector and date, so we secure your permit first and then book a lodge in the same area. Uganda’s permit costs US$800 (US$600 in April, May and November 2026). Read book gorilla permits first and our gorilla trekking guide.

Planning tip

Ask us to combine this lodge with a lake stay at Lake Bunyonyi or a wildlife stop in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
