Bwindi has four trekking sectors: Buhoma in the north (most lodges, easiest access by air from Kihihi, great for first-timers), Ruhija in the east (high, cool, best for birders), Rushaga in the south (most families, the habituation experience, close to Rwanda) and Nkuringo in the south-west (dramatic views, steepest treks). Book your lodge in the same sector as your permit.
Key takeaways
- Your permit is valid for one sector only.
- Buhoma: the most lodges and easy access via Kihihi airstrip.
- Ruhija: high, cool and best for birding.
- Rushaga: the most families and the habituation experience.
- Nkuringo: spectacular views and the toughest trails.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a large, steep forest, and it is divided into four tourism sectors around its edges. Each sector has its own park office, gorilla families and lodges. Because the sectors are several hours apart by road, the sector on your permit effectively decides where you will stay.
The sectors at a glance
| Sector | Location | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | North | Lower, warmer, most developed | First-timers, fly-in trips, Queen Elizabeth combinations |
| Ruhija | East | High (over 2,300 m), cool, quiet | Birders, fewer visitors |
| Rushaga | South | Many families, rolling hills | Habituation, travellers from Rwanda, Lake Bunyonyi |
| Nkuringo | South-west | Steep, dramatic views of the Virungas | Fit hikers, photographers |
Buhoma
Buhoma was the first sector opened for gorilla tourism, in 1993, and it has the widest choice of lodges, from the community-run Ride 4 A Woman to Bwindi Lodge and other luxury options. Kihihi airstrip is about an hour away, and the drive north to Ishasha and Queen Elizabeth is easy. The waterfall trail and the Buhoma community walk make good afternoon activities.
Ruhija
Ruhija sits on a high ridge in the east of the park. It is cool, quiet and known for birding: the Mubwindi Swamp trail is the classic site for the African green broadbill. Gorilla families here can live on steep slopes, and evenings are chilly. Read Albertine Rift endemics in Bwindi.
Rushaga
Rushaga, in the south, has the largest number of habituated families, which often makes permits easier to find. It is the only sector offering the four-hour gorilla habituation experience. It is close to Kisoro airstrip, Lake Mutanda, Lake Bunyonyi, Mgahinga and the Rwandan border.
Nkuringo
Nkuringo sits on a ridge facing the Virunga volcanoes, with some of the best views in Uganda. Treks often start with a steep descent into the valley, followed by a hard climb back up. It suits fit hikers who want a wilder, more dramatic setting.
How to choose
- Check permit availability first. Permits drive everything; we search all sectors for your dates.
- Consider your route. Coming from Queen Elizabeth? Buhoma. From Rwanda or Lake Bunyonyi? Rushaga or Nkuringo.
- Think about fitness. Nkuringo is the most demanding; tell us about any mobility concerns.
- Match your interests. Birders love Ruhija; photographers love Nkuringo’s views.
The 7:30am briefing is strict. Staying in the same sector as your permit avoids dangerous pre-dawn drives on mountain roads.
Getting there
Fly from Entebbe to Kihihi for Buhoma and Ruhija, or to Kisoro for Rushaga and Nkuringo. By road, all sectors are 8–10 hours from Entebbe. See our Bwindi guide for more.
Beyond the gorillas: what each sector offers
- Buhoma: the waterfall trail, the Buhoma community walk, the Batwa experience and easy access to Ishasha’s tree-climbing lions.
- Ruhija: the Mubwindi Swamp birding trail, the Bamboo trail and cool, misty evenings by the fire.
- Rushaga: the habituation experience, Batwa visits, Lake Mutanda canoeing and easy access to Mgahinga’s golden monkeys.
- Nkuringo: the Nkuringo–Buhoma guided walk through the forest, panoramic views of the Virungas and community craft groups.
Sample routes by sector
- Buhoma: Queen Elizabeth → Ishasha → Buhoma → fly from Kihihi.
- Rushaga or Nkuringo: Kigali → Cyanika border → Rushaga → Lake Bunyonyi.
- Ruhija: Lake Mburo → Ruhija → Buhoma, ideal for birders.
Frequently asked questions
Which Bwindi sector is best?
There is no single best. Buhoma suits first-timers and those flying in; Rushaga has the most families and suits travellers from Rwanda; Ruhija suits birders; Nkuringo suits fit hikers who want views.
Can I trek in one sector and stay in another?
It is possible but not recommended: sectors are hours apart by road, and you must be at the briefing by about 7:30am.
Which sector is easiest?
Difficulty depends on the family assigned, but Buhoma and parts of Rushaga generally have gentler access than Nkuringo.
Where is the habituation experience?
Only in the Rushaga sector.
Which sector is closest to Kigali?
Rushaga and Nkuringo, about 4–5 hours from Kigali via the Cyanika border.
Are some families easier than others?
Yes. Rangers know which families tend to stay closer to the park edge and assign visitors according to fitness where possible.
